Femandalas / Womandalas
As a feminist who believes strongly in women’s rights, I have started working on feminine, or femandalas, that embrace and showcase women’s spirit and strength.
This page includes a number of strong women and female characters. One of the designs is centered around a birth control pack, surrounded by a number of female symbols and icons, and people holding hands are the perimeter. I used this mandala to ground my protest poster for the Women’s March on Washington in January 2017.
Princess Leia was a very prominent figure at the women’s march. I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, but I like what Princess Leia stands for – the resistance. I AM a huge Carrie Fisher fan, and especially love her quote “take your broken heart and make it into art.”
Which seems like a very appropriate segue into my mandala about June/Offred from The Handmaid’s Tale. Her story breaks my heart but inspires me at the same time. She started out with her red dress swirling around her, which morphed into a red brick wall behind her. She can’t go back, but there’s a fire in front of her, with praying hands, which also resemble a crowd of pristine people.
